Build a lane rate calculator for Bluegrass Carriers, a 12 truck dry van fleet in Louisville that runs Midwest to Southeast lanes and wants to know which ones actually make money. Layout. Region one is the calculator: a wide card titled Rate a Lane with inputs for origin, destination, loaded miles, deadhead miles, linehaul rate per loaded mile, fuel surcharge per loaded mile, and flat accessorials. Beside the inputs, computed results render live in large type: total revenue, revenue per loaded mile, total miles, revenue per total mile, cost at the baseline, and margin in dollars and percent, colored green above 10% margin, amber from 0 to 10%, and red when negative. Next to it sits a small settings card holding the adjustable operating cost baseline, defaulting to $1.98 per total mile; changing it recalculates the calculator and the entire lane table. A Save Lane button adds the current inputs to the table. Region two is the lane comparison table: 20 saved lanes with columns for origin to destination, loaded miles, deadhead miles, deadhead percent, linehaul rate, fuel surcharge, accessorials, revenue per total mile, and margin percent with a green, amber, or red badge, default sorted by margin percent, best first. Data. Seed 20 lanes among Chicago, Louisville, Indianapolis, Columbus, Nashville, Memphis, Atlanta, Charlotte, Birmingham, and Jacksonville. Loaded miles 160 to 750, linehaul rates $2.00 to $2.60 per loaded mile, fuel surcharge $0.30 to $0.45, accessorials $0 to $200, deadhead 15 to 140 miles. Plant the story: Memphis to Nashville posts the highest linehaul rate in the book at $2.60 per loaded mile, but 140 deadhead miles on a 215 mile haul push it below breakeven all in, the only losing lane, while Louisville to Nashville, a 175 mile haul at a modest $2.35 with just 20 deadhead miles, lands near 19% margin, the best in the book. Keep the other 18 lanes between 2% and 15% margin so both extremes stand out and the paired charts make the deadhead trap obvious. Behavior. Every per mile figure and margin is computed from the inputs and the baseline, never typed. Public visitors are read only, so the seeded table and charts must deliver the insight without anyone touching the calculator. Visual identity. Use a burnt orange accent for primary actions, margin emphasis, and active states on a clean light neutral base, with a road atlas feel.
